What Is An Escape Room?
An escape room is a live, interactive game where you and your friends are locked (safely!) inside a themed space and given a clear goal. Instead of sitting and watching a story, you step inside it. You explore the room, search for clues, solve puzzles and work together to complete the mission before the timer runs out.
At ScreamWorks, the experience begins the moment you step through the door. You’re never met by anyone “out of character” – the world, the characters and the story are all part of the game from the very start.
Most games last around 60 minutes. An in-world character sets up the story and the basic safety points, then the door closes and the clock starts. From that moment, nobody is telling you what to do. You decide how to explore, what to try and how to spend your precious time.
What Kind Of Things Will You Discover?
Escape rooms are full of small discoveries. You might:
- Find keys, codes or symbols hidden in books, drawers or behind pictures.
- Notice patterns in paintings, posters or strange pieces of furniture.
- Press secret buttons, flip switches or open hidden compartments.
- Decode messages using maps, music, lights, sounds or strange objects.
- Trigger surprising events: a new room opens, a light changes, a voice speaks or a video plays.
You don’t need special knowledge, maths skills or “gamer” experience. Most puzzles are based on observation, logic, pattern-spotting and communication with your team.
How Do You Win?
Every escape room has its own mission. It might be to escape a creepy house, stop a disaster, steal a treasure or solve a mystery. To win, you usually need to:
- Explore the space and gather information and objects.
- Work out which puzzles are linked and what order to tackle them in.
- Use the clues you’ve found to unlock locks, doors, safes or mechanisms.
- Reach the final objective before the timer hits zero.
You win if you complete the mission in time. Sometimes that means literally getting out of the room; sometimes it means finishing a story objective, like disarming a bomb or exposing a secret.
What Happens If You Get Stuck?
In many escape rooms, you can press a button and ask the host for a hint on demand. ScreamWorks is different. There is no “hint button” and no friendly voice breaking character to explain what to do next.
Instead, any guidance you receive is built into the world itself – objects that react, characters that respond to what you do, or environmental changes that nudge attentive teams in the right direction. You’re encouraged to think, experiment and communicate rather than wait to be told the answer.
What Happens If You Lose?
If time runs out before you finish, the game ends and you are brought back out of the story. A member of the team will then step out of character, talk you through what you missed and answer questions about the puzzles and secrets you didn’t reach.
You still get the experience, the photos and the story; you just don’t get to brag about beating the room… this time.
Why Are Escape Rooms So Fun?
- You are inside the story. Instead of watching a film or playing on a screen, you become the main character.
- Everyone has a role. Different people notice different things. Quiet observers, confident talkers and hands-on tinkerers all matter.
- It’s pure teamwork. No one person has all the information. You win by sharing what you find and listening to each other.
- It’s exciting, not just “hard.” The ticking clock, the atmosphere and the surprises create a rush that you can’t get from a quiz or board game.
- You get a shared memory. Whether you escape or not, you walk out with one big story that everyone experienced together.
Who Are Escape Rooms For?
Escape rooms are great for friends, families, couples and work teams. Most games have a recommended minimum age, and some are light-hearted while others are spooky or intense. If you’re unsure, check the age rating and theme before you book.
If you enjoy mysteries, solving problems or just trying something different from the usual bar, cinema or meal, an escape room is an easy way to do something memorable with your group—even if it’s your very first time. At ScreamWorks, we specialise in fully immersive, in-character experiences that feel like stepping into a live film, not just solving puzzles on a wall.
