The Story

Planning permission has been secured for a swanky new hotel in the heart of Bethnal Green.

One woman stands in the way of โ€œprogressโ€โ€ฆ Granny.

Granny lives in the last remaining house on Paradise Row, behind an abandoned bookshop. Sheโ€™s barricaded herself inside, armed with a small arsenal of homemade defences, and is refusing to sell.

Developers who have entered the house to โ€œtalk senseโ€ into her have come running out screaming โ€” if theyโ€™ve come out at all.

Now the developers are desperate. Theyโ€™re offering a generous reward to anyone brave enough to enter Grannyโ€™s house, survive the encounter, and convince her to sell.

Perfect birthday mission, right?

DISCLAIMER: There are unconfirmed reports of booby traps, an elaborate DIY security system, and previous visitors failing to return calls… So this birthday might well be, erm, your last!

A birthday party inside a booby-trapped house

Forget awkward dinners and small talk around a table. Granny is a full-scale birthday horror escape room where your celebration is the mission.

You and your friends will spend your birthday:

  • Sneaking through pitch-black corridors
  • Dodging laser beams and nets
  • Hacking fuse boards and disarming traps

All while an unhinged Granny hunts you through her house!

Your whole group plays together in one huge, open-world escape room โ€“ seven interconnected rooms, all doors open, zero hand-holding. You decide where to go, which puzzles to tackle first, and whoโ€™s brave enough to lead the way.

Itโ€™s loud, chaotic, and unbelievably fun: Big laughs, bigger screams, and that โ€œwhat did we just live through?โ€ feeling at the end.

Why Granny is the ultimate birthday escape room

  • Free birthday gift – But you’ll have to find it first!
  • All in it together โ€“ No splitting into tiny teams; you celebrate as one big group inside the same experience.
  • Made for big birthday groups โ€“ Designed for large groups who want to actually play together, not queue for turns.
  • Scary and hilarious โ€“ Jump scares, panic, bad decisionsโ€ฆ then laughing about it for the rest of the night.
  • A story youโ€™ll tell for years โ€“ โ€œRemember that birthday where Granny nearly got us in the laser corridor?โ€ becomes a thing.

What to expect on the day

Step through the abandoned bookshop, into Grannyโ€™s house, and straight into the story โ€“ no briefing room, no awkward ice-breaker games, just instant immersion.

You arrive, drop your stuff, and the experience begins.

Youโ€™ve got one hour to outsmart the house, survive Granny and find your free birthday gift!

At the end, your hearts pounding, you’re still buzzing and continue to argue over who completely lost their nerve.

If youโ€™re looking for a birthday escape room in London thatโ€™s actually memorable โ€“ not just โ€œniceโ€ โ€“ Granny is it.

FAQs

How do we redeem your Birthday offer?

Our birthday offer is only available on private time-slots, and is limited to one birthday gift per event.

If more than one person in your group is celebrating a birthday, please email us before you book to discuss. At our absolute discretion we may be willing to extend the offer; if we do, weโ€™ll confirm this with you by email before your booking takes place.

To redeem the standard birthday offer, simply complete the โ€œExtra Informationโ€ fields at checkout (for example, the question โ€œIs this booking for a birthday?โ€). We rely on this information being provided during checkout and canโ€™t add or process birthday requests manually after an order has been placed. If you cannot see a checkbox, then this offer is not available for your selected time-slot.ย

Why is Granny such a great choice for Birthdays?

Granny is an exceptional choice for birthdays because it delivers scale, variety, and shared excitement in a way very few experiences can.

Itโ€™s one of the largest escape rooms in the world, packed with imaginative puzzles, physical challenges, and playful surprises. With space for up to 18 players at the same time, itโ€™s ideal for birthday groups who want to stay together rather than being split up โ€” and because thereโ€™s so much happening across the experience, no one feels left out or stuck waiting on the sidelines.

While Granny has moments of tension and suspense, itโ€™s never about gore or cheap scares. The pressure is balanced with genuinely fun, laugh-out-loud elements โ€” including our unique twist on the party classic Twister and a chaotic ball pit that always becomes a highlight. The result is an experience that feels thrilling, social, and celebratory rather than intimidating.

Add to that cinematic sets, constant teamwork, and a shared sense of achievement, and you get a birthday people will talk about long after the cake is gone. Take a look at our videos and youโ€™ll quickly see why ScreamWorks โ€” and Granny in particular โ€” is such a popular choice for birthdays.

Ohโ€ฆ and yes โ€” the birthday person gets a free gift too.

Why donโ€™t you give a traditional pre-show briefing?

Because the experience begins the moment you arrive.

We donโ€™t believe immersion should be something you switch on after a safety talk. Being gathered together and told โ€œthis is a game, hereโ€™s how it worksโ€ immediately pulls you out of the world weโ€™ve spent years building.

Instead, Granny starts without announcement. There is no pre-show performance, no out-of-character explanation, and no moment where someone tells you whatโ€™s about to happen. Youโ€™re not entering a game โ€” youโ€™re stepping into a situation.

Everything you need to know is communicated naturally, in-world, as events unfold. This allows tension, curiosity, and atmosphere to build without interruption, and lets you discover the experience for yourselves rather than being instructed how to play it.

Itโ€™s a deliberate design choice.

We trust our players to adapt, explore, and work things out together โ€” just as they would if this were real.

How can 18 players all play Granny at the same time?

The puzzles donโ€™t change.

What changes is how much is happening at once.

Granny is designed so the same challenges work just as well for four people as they do for eighteen. Nothing becomes locked behind a single person or a single task, and thereโ€™s never a point where everyone is expected to stand around waiting.

With more people in the house, more things are active at the same time. Different rooms draw attention simultaneously. Discoveries overlap. Conversations happen in parallel.

Some players will be hands-on, tackling physical challenges. Others will be exploring, spotting patterns, sharing discoveries, or keeping track of whatโ€™s happening elsewhere. Roles tend to emerge on their own as the experience unfolds. The house doesnโ€™t tell you how to organise yourselves โ€” and thereโ€™s no single โ€œrightโ€ way through it.

Whether you arrive as a small group or a large one, Granny stays busy. The challenge isnโ€™t finding something to do โ€” itโ€™s deciding what to focus on next.

Do you have a clue system?

Yes โ€” but not a traditional one.

There is no button to press, no camera to look at, and no out-of-world voice telling you what to do next. All information is delivered in-world, as part of the environment itself.

Guidance may appear through phone calls, printed materials, background interruptions, service messages, or systems embedded in the house. Some of it is useful. Some of it is partial. Some of it only makes sense later. Occasionally, it raises more questions than it answers.

This is intentional.

Granny is designed as a continuous, self-contained world. Stepping outside it to request a โ€œclueโ€ would collapse the fiction โ€” and the responsibility โ€” that the experience is built around. Instead of being told what to do, teams are expected to observe, interpret, share information, and decide how to proceed for themselves.

Information exists in the house.
What you do with it is up to you.

Why don't you accept late-comers?

Granny begins as soon as the fixed 15-minute check-in window closes.

All of our systems โ€” including safety checks, consent recording, data protection, and in-world personalisation โ€” assume that once this window ends, the experience is already underway and no additional people will enter.

Allowing someone in after that point would place them outside those systems, which weโ€™re legally and operationally unable to do.

For this reason, even if you let us know youโ€™re running late, we canโ€™t admit anyone once the check-in window has closed.

We strongly recommend arriving early and reading the pre-show information we send you. Doing so ensures a smooth check-in and allows the experience to run exactly as intended.

Will I still enjoy this even though I am not a horror fan?

ScreamWorks events are designed to be enjoyable even for non-horror fans. That having been said, Granny creates fear, paranoia and anxiety in its participants and has been given a fear factor of 3/5, so if you really donโ€™t enjoy feeling afraid, then we recommend that you book the ‘No Live Actor’ version, which is identical in terms of puzzles but without an unhinged geriatric lunatic hunting you down.ย

Is Granny a traditional escape room?

Granny is an escape room โ€” but on an epic scale.

Instead of a linear sequence of puzzles across one or two rooms, Granny unfolds across an entire seven-room house. There is no prescribed order. You decide where to go, what to tackle first, and how to approach your mission. Those choices matter โ€” and theyโ€™ll shape your experience.

The challenges youโ€™ll face are far more varied than in a traditional escape room. We find padlocks boring! Expect physical puzzles, environmental games, hidden mechanisms, and systems that respond to your actions as the house comes alive around you.

This is a non-linear experience. Solving one puzzle doesnโ€™t simply open the next door (in fact, all doors are unlocked throughout). Progress comes from exploration, experimentation, and piecing together the story. As you move through the house, youโ€™ll uncover fragments of Grannyโ€™s past โ€” and those discoveries can change what tools and information are available to you. Even the in-game clue system must be unlocked through your actions.

The scale of the house allows teams to spread out, split up, and work in parallel. Granny plays comfortably with as few as four players and up to eighteen, and many smaller teams complete the experience successfully. Success isnโ€™t about numbers โ€” itโ€™s about communication, creativity, and how well you adapt under pressure.

Can Granny touch me?

You will not be touched intentionally by Granny and you must not touch Granny.

What is the age restriction for Granny?

The age restriction is 13+, but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and we administer this by enforcing a minimum adult-to-child ticket ratio of 1 : 6.ย

Are there live actors?

Yes. Granny might be ancient, but she ainโ€™t dead yet.

You can purchase a No Live Actor version of the experience if you want to enjoy the fun without the scares.

Is there somewhere secure to leave my bags?

Yes. Your belongings will be stored in lockers in the bookshop. We strongly urge you to leave all your belongings here as we run back-to-back sessions and will not be able to spend more than a maximum of five minutes searching Granny’s house for lost property, whether that be your phone or car keys. In the event that you do lose something inside Granny house and our staff cannot find it within five minutes, then we will take your contact details and a detailed description of your belongings and contact you when/if we do find it.ย

Can I bring my phone into the experience?

Yes โ€” but with a few important conditions:

If you choose to bring your phone (or any other personal items) into the house and lose it during the game, we can allow only five minutes for retrieval before the next group must begin. After that, you will need to leave your contact details and our team will contact you to arrange an appointment for you to collect your lost property.ย

The house is large, dimly lit, and filled with places where items can be easily misplaced. For that reason, we strongly recommend the following:

  • Keep your phone on loud (not silent or vibrate)

  • Enable voice activation (e.g., โ€œHey Siriโ€ / โ€œOK Googleโ€) so we can help locate it quickly if needed

Weโ€™ve never had a guest permanently lose an item at Granny, and weโ€™d like to keep it that way. But please remember: if you bring valuables into the experience, you do so at your own risk โ€” and we cannot delay other guests if youโ€™re unable to keep track of them.

Do you have a customer toilet?

There is one toilet available during the experience โ€” but itโ€™s Grannyโ€™s bathroom, and youโ€™ll need to find it first. Once the game begins, you can use it at any timeโ€ฆ if youโ€™re brave enough to enter. We strongly recommend using the bathroom before you arrive. Many guests stop at Mother Kellyโ€™s nearby for a pre-show drink โ€” they are happy for you to use their facilities and if you show them your Granny ticket, youโ€™ll receive 10% off your bill.

Can each member of my group pay individually?

The minimum cost to reserve a timeslot is 4 tickets. If youโ€™re planning to visit Granny with a group larger than 4 and want others to pay separately, just purchase 4 tickets in one transaction to secure your slot. Youโ€™ll receive a confirmation email with all the instructions โ€” including a booking link and password โ€” so your friends can add themselves to your timeslot later.

I have a physical disability, is this event suitable for me?

The experience takes place on a single level and does not involve crawling. However, due to the layout of the building, it is unfortunatelyย not wheelchair accessible.

Some areas have uneven surfaces and low or intermittent lighting, so there is a degree of physicality involved that may make the event unsuitable for those with limited mobility or balance concerns.

If you have accessibility needs, we require you to get in touch with us before booking, so we can discuss your specific requirements and advise accordingly.

If youโ€™re registered as needing a carer (e.g. via DLA or equivalent), weโ€™re happy to provide aย free carer ticket. Just email us atย ย info@screamworks.co.uk

I am pregnant, is this event suitable for me?

The experience may involve moments of physical intensity, startle effects, and an unpredictable environment โ€” all of which make it unsafe during pregnancy.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes with a good grip โ€“ trainers are perfect. Please avoid high heel shoes or any shoes which have a smooth leather bottom, like formal wear.

Where are you located?

Granny lives behind Thorne’s Bookshop at 261 Paradise Row, E2 9LE. It is a two-minute walk from Bethnal Green underground station (Central Line) and a twelve-minute walk from Bethnal Green overground station. Click hereย to see a map.

Avpid using Google Maps or City Mapper as these third-party apps can be unreliable.ย

I am coming by car, where shall I park?

We do not have a customer parking facility. However, there are plenty of parking bays on adjacent streets.ย

How do we access the footage from our experience?

After attending the event, you can log in using the email address you used at check-in and access your footage via theย Attendee Dashboard. Please note: this system is currently in beta and is provided as a gesture of goodwill โ€” we cannot guarantee availability, functionality, or technical support. Access is only granted if all members of your group check in and no one has opted-out of peer sharing.

Is there a safe word, if it all gets too much?

Yes. Well, a ‘safe action’: Simply raise two hands in the air and stand still. Be patient, Granny’s house is enormous and it can take our staff a little while to spot you, but you are not being ignored.ย

Please note that if any member of your group asks for the experience to stop, we disarm all systems, turn on the emergency lights and escort your whole group safely out of the building. We do not have the ability to restart the game systems after they have been deactivated, so we cannot allow the game to continue after a member of your group has asked for it to stop. And we do not offer refunds for games stopped prematurely at the request of customers.ย

Whats the difference between a public and private timeslot?

Most of our timeslots are private, which means that your group will not be joined by strangers. After making your purchase you will be given a password so only your friends and family can join your booking (you can add extra tickets up to two hours before the start time).

Occasionally we open up a small number of ‘public’ timeslots. These are generally cheaper because you may be joined by other members of the public. Because Granny is not an 18+ event, we enforce a minimum booking quantity of two players for all public timeslots, for safeguarding reasons. Unfortunately, this means that we cannot offer tickets to solo travellers.ย
